The Winnipeg Jets, in conjunction with the National Hockey League, today announced that forward Mark Scheifele has been named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week for the week ending Dec. 16/18.

Scheifele, 25, opened the week with a goal and an assist in Winnipeg’s 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Kitchener, Ont. native had three points (1G, 2A), including an assist on the winner in the Jets’ 5-4 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers. Scheifele scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner, and added an assist as Winnipeg won in overtime again the following night in Chicago. On Sunday, he had a pair of assists and again tallied the winner in sudden death in a 5-4 come from behind victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Scheifele joined Kyle Connor as the second player in franchise history to record consecutive overtime goals and he’s the second player in franchise history to record three-or-more points in three straight games (also Marc Savard from Nov. 9-12/05). In total this week, he led the league in points with 11 (5G, 6A), and he is currently riding a five-game point streak (5G, 9A) over Winnipeg’s five-game winning streak.

On the season, Scheifele is fifth in the NHL in points (46), tied for fourth in goals (21), and his +17 rating leads the Jets and is tied for 11th-best in the league. He has also tied the franchise record for overtime points in a season with five (3G, 2A).

This is the third time this season (also Dec. 3 – First Star and Oct. 29 – Second Star) and the sixth time in his career that Scheifele has been selected in the NHL’s Three Stars of the Week. He is the fifth Jets player to be selected in 2018-19 after Winnipeg had eight appearances in the Three Stars of the Week last season. Scheifele joins Patrik Laine (Nov. 26 – First Star) and Blake Wheeler (Nov. 12 – Second Star) as members of the Jets that have earned NHL Three Stars of the Week honours this season.
